About Me.
Paw prints and dog fur - so much dog fur - currently exist in my house in the form of a Great Pyrenees and a Bernese Mountain Dog.
Hi, I'm Gail (she/her).
I have a bachelor of science in environmental science, with a minor in Western European history. After college, I spent nearly a decade working in occupational safety and health and environmental remediation. Most of my jobs focused on lead and other RCRA 8 metals; asbestos; and petroleum remediations. I started out doing field work and eventually worked my way up to project management.
What does any of that have to do with proofreading?, you ask. Quite a bit, actually. Once I was no longer exclusively doing field work, I began writing reports when I was in the office. I spent several years writing and peer-reviewing reports, bid packages, legal documentation, and official correspondences. I've written and proofread tens of thousands of pages of documentation. I'm familiar with industry jargon and know my way around government documents and publications, including the Code of Federal Regulations.
Even once I quit the workforce in order to become a stay-at-home mom when my oldest was born, I continued to proofread things for friends and family -- resumes, cover letters, essays, stories, blog posts, all sorts of things. I've been writing for myself across a variety of genres since middle school (which, let's just say was a long time ago and leave it at that!). I also do volunteer proofreading for Distributed Proofreaders, a part of Project Gutenberg, which strives to digitize and make available to the public works whose copyrights have expired.
I've been continuing to take courses in English grammar, usage, and style as well as proofreading and editing including:
I am a member of ACES: The Society for Editing (ACES), The Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), and The Professional Editors Network (PEN).
My mom was a librarian and I grew up reading constantly. I'll proofread work in pretty much any genre or industry. Highly specialized technical and/or medical proofreading (other than environmental remediation and occupational safety and health) is a bit outside my wheelhouse, though. If you have such a document, feel free to send me a sample and I will gladly take a look and let you know if it is something I can handle or not. For documents containing graphic/explicit violence, torture, sexual assault/abuse, child abuse, or other such content, please provide a sample and an approximate percentage of the total text such themes encompass so I can determine whether it is a job I am willing to take. I will NOT proofread hate-speech.
